Dear Iona community,
It was with great enthusiasm at assembly yesterday that we extended a warm welcome to both new and returning students as we embark on the 2025 school year.
I have enjoyed meeting new students and families over the past few days and am eager to connect with those I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet.
We welcomed our Year 5 students to the assembly with a round of applause as they arrived in The Provence Centre. This was a special experience that starts an exciting journey towards their personal and academic growth.
At Iona, we strive to be more than just a place of learning. We strive to be a community dedicated to nurturing each other’s God-given potential to help everyone achieve personal excellence.
Personal excellence is about doing our very best, and that varies uniquely from one person to another. Whether it means achieving all 'A' results or making significant strides from previous performances, our goal is to support each student in growing into their potential.
Our commitment as a school towards this goal extends beyond academic achievements. We strive to create an environment where every student feels safe and empowered to explore their talents, whether in academics, sports or the arts. As a Christian, Catholic College, our mission has its foundations in the teachings of Jesus, which call us to foster a compassionate and just world.
A foundational aspect of our ethos, which I discussed with all students at assembly yesterday, is the guiding principles of the Golden and Silver Rules. These ‘rules’ are vital in shaping our interactions within our community:
- The Golden Rule: "Treat others the way you want to be treated."
This principle encourages proactive kindness and empathy. It's about making positive choices that uplift others — whether through a welcoming smile, a kind word, or a helping hand when someone is in need. An example I gave was that, if you appreciate when others include you, make an effort to include those who might be feeling left out. - The Silver Rule: "Do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you."
Also simplified to "Do no harm", this rule serves as a reminder to avoid actions that could harm or exclude others. It teaches us to consider our actions carefully, ensuring that we avoid causing distress or discomfort to others. The example I shared was that this could mean stepping back from making a hurtful comment or choosing not to participate in gossip.
Our students heard that these principles help us cultivate a culture where everyone feels safe, respected and part of a caring community.
By embracing these ‘rules’, they contribute to making Iona a place where everyone looks forward to being each day — a place that feels safe for everyone to work towards the goal of recognising and growing into their God-given potential and achieve personal excellence.
I am excited to see what we will achieve together in 2025 by continuing to build on the positive contributions that have shaped the outstanding facilities and community we cherish at Iona.
Of course, community is built on relationships. One person who establishes strong relationships with both students and parents is Ms Lisa Mugridge.
After unfortunately receiving some health news after Christmas, Ms Mugridge will be taking leave during Term 1 to focus on her health.
Ms. Mugridge has been a pillar of kindness and care at Iona, and while we will all miss her presence daily, she knows that every prayer and thought is being sent from all Ionians towards her and her recovery.
While we will miss Ms Mugridge during Term 1, we are very fortunate to have Mrs Rebecca Hayes stepping in to fill in at student reception. Mrs. Hayes brings her own warmth and professionalism, and we look forward to working with her this term.
Once again, welcome to a new school year filled with opportunities. I look forward to celebrating our collective achievements and witnessing the growth of our students in 2025.
God bless,
Mr Trevor Goodwin
Principal
Welcome back to all families for 2025.
I hope you all had a restful, refreshing and renewing holiday break. I’m filled with excitement and gratitude to begin another year together. The new year is another beautiful gift from God, and we are blessed to make the most of it.
With this in mind, the Iona Leadership Team, guided by both Oblate and educational values, has set an important goal for all Ionians of identifying our potential and growing into our personal excellence.
How can we make the most of this opportunity?
- How can I recognise and embrace my unique potential this year, and what steps can I take to nurture it?
- What does personal excellence mean to me, and how can I work towards achieving it in both my academic and personal life?
- In what ways can I contribute to the growth of others, as we all strive to achieve our full potential together?
In addition to our personal growth, 2025 is also a Jubilee year for the Catholic Church. This is celebrated every 25 years as we celebrate the Incarnation of Jesus. This special year invites us to remember our roots, celebrate how far we’ve come, and look forward with hope and purpose to what is yet to be achieved.
In this spirit of renewal, we also look forward to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of our beloved College Chapel this year.
To mark this milestone, we will unveil a new stained glass door on the last day of Term 1. The Leadership Team and the Oblates are eagerly anticipating this moment and can’t wait to share the beautiful story behind this new addition.
Just as that door will be a new beginning for the Chapel, let’s remember that we’re all on a journey of transformation, growing in faith and hope together.
St Eugene de Mazenod believed that education is about nurturing the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. He wanted us to grow into our fullest potential and use our gifts to make the world a better place. His life challenges us to aim for personal excellence and live with purpose and service to others.
St Eugene himself is a remarkable example of identifying one’s potential and striving for excellence. In his early years, he was not a great model of holiness that we might imagine. But he recognised a deep, untapped potential within himself and, through a radical transformation, sought to become the person God was calling him to be.
He took on the challenge of pursuing priesthood later in life, a decision that wasn’t easy at the time.
But through perseverance, humility, and a deep sense of purpose, St Eugene grew into an exceptional leader, founding the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate and dedicating his life to serving those in need.
His story reminds us that it’s never too late to identify our strengths, overcome our struggles, and step into the fullness of who we are meant to be.
As we step into this academic year, I encourage all of you to discover your unique gifts, explore your passions, and become the person you are meant to be.
Like St Eugene, let’s embrace the challenges ahead and use them to grow into the best version of ourselves.
Together, let’s make this year one of transformation, growth, and excellence.
God bless,
Fr Joe Antony OMI

This is a courtesy reminder to families of all Iona students from Years 5-12 about the College's expectations regarding the expectations that come with being an Ionian.
All students were reminded of these expectations at Wednesday's assembly by College Deputy Principal Mr McPhee, Dean of Senior Years Mr Devlin and Dean of Middle Years Mr Hohn.
The following expectations which will be a focus throughout Term 1:
- Student haircuts must meet the requirements stated on Pages 117-118 of the College Student Diary. Students with haircuts that do not meet these expectations must have these rectified by Monday 3 February.
- A College bag is a required uniform item for student each day. The HPE string bag is not to be used for this purpose. Students should not attend school carrying their laptop bag and a lunch esky only.
- Students in Senior Years are expected to wear their hat to and from school each day. This includes student drivers upon arriving and when leaving.
We look forward to an inspiring and productive term ahead. Welcome once again to all our students and parents. May it be a year of personal excellence.
Mr Adam McPhee – Deputy Principal
Mr Ben Devlin – Dean of Senior Years
Mr Steven Hohn – Dean of Middle Years
Mr Peter Holmes – Dean of Primary Years
Welcome to all Year 10, 11, and 12 students to the Senior Years phase of your journey at Iona College.
This is an exciting time filled with opportunities for personal growth, academic achievement, and memorable experiences. We look forward to supporting each of you academically and pastorally as you navigate this important chapter.
A special welcome to the Year 10 students who were inducted via the hat ceremony on Wednesday. Your white shirt and grey felt hat represent the vision of Fr Tim Long OMI for Ionians to achieve and be accountable to high standards of personal presentation.
These items are also a symbol of the status and responsibility bestowed upon a Senior student at Iona. Your enthusiasm and personal discipline set the tone for a successful journey ahead.
We are also delighted to host Paul Dillon from DARTA (Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia) who will be presenting to all students on Monday, 3 February.
Paul's sessions are highly informative and aimed at equipping students with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions regarding drug and alcohol use.
In addition to the student sessions, there will be a parent engagement evening that night where Paul Dillon will share his insights and provide valuable information to help parents support their children in making safe and healthy choices.
This is a free event, but you will need to RSVP to secure your seat.
Mr Ben Devlin

Welcome, or indeed welcome back, to all Primary Years families for the commencement of the 2025 school year.
The first few days are often a blur for our students. With the staggered start, we hope to have gently introduced our Year 5s to all things Primary and the wider College itself. I am sure they are still weary after the excitement, nervous energy and all that takes place within the first few days.

Year 6 commenced yesterday and were keen to move into the role of Senior Primary leaders. They have been charged with the responsibility of ensuring that Year 5s are looked after in the coming days and weeks - all part of being a good leader.
Staff changes / additions
With the departure of Miss Butler during the holidays, we have been fortunate enough to welcome back Mr Matt Russo to the 6B classroom.
Mr Russo is well known to students and families, having taught for several years within Primary Years. The lads in 6B are most fortunate to have Mr Russo as their mentor.
We also lost Mrs Conn (Primary Years Head of Diverse Learning) and Mr Sayers (Primary Teacher Aide) from our Diverse Learning Department. We have welcomed Ms Street (Primary DL Teacher, Year 5), Ms Meredith (Primary DL Teacher, Year 6) and Mrs Van Kerkwyk (Primary Years TA). I know that all three of these new staff members already feel a part of our community and will be wonderful additions to the College.
General information
A reminder to please read ALL sports information recently provided. It is incredibly important in these first weeks. Please read the Wednesday Sport Newsletter, become familiar with ‘Clipboard’ and stay up to date with all things sporting. Don’t forget the ‘Iona Sport’ booklet that Mr Russell sent last week (23 January) - it is a treasure trove of important information.
Munch and Crunch: As our Iona timetable is a five-period day, morning tea does not commence until 10.52am. As such, Primary students will be invited to bring something that is easy to consume within their classrooms (poppers, water, fruit, muesli bars, biscuits, etc. - no soft drinks or messy foods please). Boys will use the break between Periods 1 and 2, and this should see them through til morning tea.
Locks and lockers: All students should have been issued with a locker and a lock by the time this newsletter is received. Please remind them to NOT share their lock codes. They should write them in a safe place within their diaries. Students keep bags, phones, smart watches, wallets, earphones, etc in their locker, hence the need for codes to be kept private.
Year 13s: Year 5 parents, your children may have come home and mentioned the ‘Year 13s’ in their class. This is correct! These volunteering students are returning Old Boys (mostly from 2024) who are part of a program within Years 5 and 7, to work with all students to settle in, navigate movement around the College and generally assist classroom teachers within their classrooms during the first two weeks.

Bus and train travel: As students begin to move to train and bus travel, please remind them of care and behaviour. We have large numbers of students who use both forms of transport each day, and safety and behaviour are high priorities.
Lunchboxes: Could all lunchboxes be named on the outside please? Many students have the same or very similar lunchboxes and names would certainly help identifying them correctly at the end of breaks. The same could be said of ALL personal belongings. We do have a lost property area, but we find that if items are clearly labelled, this greatly reduces lost property concerns.
Smart watches: A new and quickly evolving phenomena is the rapid increase in the use of smart watches by our students. These can be a misused item at school, and are therefore required to be placed within lockers during the day, as per phones.
Hair, uniform and bags: My sincere thanks for the manner in which our students have returned to the College after holidays. Please refer to the College diary about what is suitable regarding appropriate hair standards, correct uniform and what bags (including sporting) are permitted.

Year 5 Wellbeing Day: Thursday, 20 February. Further information will be communicated to Year 5 families.

Finally, my sincere thanks to all families for the enthusiastic engagement with the College during this first week. It is always somewhat ‘organised chaos’ but you have made it much easier for your children and the staff to begin our year in a truly positive manner.
Know that you are always welcome to reach out to us, and to me in particular, if you have concerns, questions or moments of success that you would like to share!
Mr Peter Holmes
Dean of Primary Years
The Primary Learning Pod (POD) is again being used for a range of activities in 2025, from extension maths, literacy support, student leadership meetings and small group programs.
At every morning tea and lunch, it is a place of welcome, inclusion and connection through play - ping pong, pool, putt-putt, puzzles, chess, Lego, games and much more. Please encourage your son to visit the space in the next few weeks.
In Primary this year, we welcome back our two wellbeing dogs, Cloud and Ty, who are part of the Delta Dogs Classroom Canines Program proudly funded by our P&F.
They visit alternate weeks on a Monday and Friday, and are in and around the POD. They are also used for individual student pastoral support and undertake classroom visits.

Breaking New Ground
The Iona Leadership Team was pleased to announce today that an exciting new era for Aussie rules at Iona College begins in 2025, with an historic new partnership with the AFL delivering floodlights to St Eugene’s Park.
This major investment in the code at Iona is part of a Queensland-first partnership with the AFL to increase Aussie rules infrastructure in schools.
Iona College is the first school in the state to partner with AFL Queensland through the 'Breaking New Ground’ program which assists with the planning, design, and development of Australian football facilities at schools and other innovative locations.
This project will see the installation of lights over the MCG sized oval for the use of the school and the local AFL community, allowing for this great space to be utilised for longer every day.
Today’s announcement comes after Iona earlier this week unveiled an all-star AFL First XVIII coaching roster comprising of former Brisbane Lions captain Tom Rockliff and ex-North Melbourne star Leigh Harding ahead of the new AFL season.
Iona College Principal Trevor Goodwin said the partnership with AFL Queensland and the installation of the lights would be a boost for the College’s students and families, as well as the local community.
“Community is at the heart of everything we do at Iona, and our wonderful relationship with AFL Queensland has now grown into a true partnership through the Breaking New Ground’ program,” Mr Goodwin said.
“This partnership is the result of a lot of hard work from both sides. The end result is not only a first for schools in Queensland, but supports the growth of the game and greater opportunities for our students and the local community.
“Iona is delighted to be at the forefront of this initiative, and very proud of our strong relationship with the AFL to deliver this project for our community.”
Head of AFL Queensland Trisha Squires said Iona was a perfect choice for the first breaking new ground project.
“Iona is fortunate to have such incredible facilities and expansive fields for their sporting teams, and their commitment to Australian rules football can be seen by the fact their main footy oval – St Eugene’s Park – was designed deliberately to be the exact same dimensions as the MCG,” Mrs Squires said.
“Iona is also very committed to their community and has great existing relationships with the local community Australian rules football clubs and has been the host venue for matches in the Queensland Wheelchair Football League, including QClash games between the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast SUNS.
“Iona College has been fantastic to work with in establishing a partnership for this project and we are grateful for the funding provided through the AFL Queensland Grand Final Facilities Fund.”
The AFL Queensland Grand Final Facilities Fund is an $8 million partnership between the Queensland Government and the AFL, which is part of the legacy of hosting the historic 2020 AFL Grand Final at the Gabba.

Public Transport Updates
A couple of important announcements for Iona families who use public transport for their sons to get to and from school.
Buses
Drop-off and pick-up procedures
Please use the designated drop-off and pick-up zone between Davine and McCarthy ovals, accessed via Bulgin Ave. For safety reasons, children are only to enter and exit the vehicle from the left, and only when you are in the drop-off zone marked in yellow on the road. Please do not allow students to enter or exit the vehicle at the top of the hill.
Other options available for drop-off / pick-up:
We understand that the designated drop-off and pick-up zone does get busy at peak times. Delaying your pick-up time until 3.25pm, after the peak-time traffic has cleared, is an alternative that will see reduced congestion at the pick-up zone.
Other options that are available for you to safely drop off or pick up your son are:
- Drop off / pick your child up on the school side only of Sandy Camp Road and North Road, north of the main entrance (alongside the ovals)
- If other drop-off / pick-up areas are congested, the grassed overflow area beside Main Drive on North Road will be made available to increase capacity at peak times
Please do not use the following areas for pick up or drop off:
- The opposite side of North Road from the College – with the new bus zone and bus stop, this area is now no stopping
- There is to be no access to the main entrance of the College on North Road for pick up and drop off purposes, unless under exceptional circumstances. Pick up and drop off of students in any of the following areas presents a significant safety risk to students:
- under IPAC
- the grassed area beside the North Road driveway
- outside the main office
- Chapel car park
- any designated staff car parks
Student access to the College
Please note that students are only able to enter and exit the College via the designated pathways as outlined on the map below.
Annual fees for 2025 will be distributed in the coming weeks, along with a current Statement of Account.
