Primary Matters

Welcome back to what is always a vibrant and fast-paced Term 4!

I hope that all families enjoyed a restful holiday break and that our students have returned feeling refreshed and ready for an exciting final eight weeks of the school year.

The term ahead is short but full, and filled with opportunity, celebration, and growth as we make our way toward the Christmas break.

Year 5 Camp

Our Year 5 students and staff are busily preparing for their upcoming camp, which for many is their first experience away from home.

We recognise that this milestone brings a mix of emotions: excitement, anticipation, and at times, a little nervousness.

Camp is a significant growth opportunity for our young men. It allows them to take themselves beyond their comfort zones, build independence, and strengthen relationships with their peers and teachers.

Students will be well supported and cared for throughout the experience. We ask that families join us in encouraging their sons to embrace the challenge and trust the process of growth that comes with stepping into something new.

Year 6 Wellbeing Day

Next Thursday, our Year 6 students will participate in a Wellbeing Day designed to help them explore and develop practical tools to support their emotional, physical, and mental health.

Through a series of engaging workshops and activities, facilitated by both internal staff and external specialists, students will focus on emotional expression, physical fitness, and mindfulness practices that build confidence and resilience.

We look forward to sharing this valuable day with our senior Primary students as they continue their journey toward secondary school.

AIC Track and Field Carnival

Congratulations and good luck to all students and staff involved in preparing for the AIC Track and Field Carnival taking place today and tomorrow at QSAC.

Our Primary team has trained diligently over the past weeks to represent Iona with pride, teamwork, and determination. Iona has a proud tradition in athletics, and we look forward to seeing our young athletes continue that legacy through their effort, spirit, and sportsmanship.

PAT Testing

Throughout this week, all Primary classes are completing Progressive Achievement Testing (PAT) in key learning areas.

These assessments provide valuable data that help us monitor each student’s academic growth and identify areas of strength and improvement.

The insights gained allow our teaching team to refine classroom practice, target specific learning needs, and ensure every boy continues to progress at his individual level. PAT testing forms an important part of our commitment to delivering evidence-informed, personalised learning for all students.

Haircuts and Standards

Thank you for working with us to ensure that your son has returned to school with a neat haircut and a well-presented uniform. While these may seem like small details, they matter greatly.

Maintaining high standards in presentation sets the tone for how our boys approach their learning, relationships, and responsibilities. When students take pride in how they present themselves, it reflects respect for their school, for others, and for themselves.

We appreciate your continued support in helping uphold these expectations. It’s another way we work together to reinforce what it means to be part of the Iona family.

As we begin this final stretch of the school year, I’m grateful for the strong partnership between home and school. Together, we can ensure our young Ionians finish the year focused, proud, and thriving – in the classroom and in character.

Warm regards,

Mr Brayden Teece
Acting Dean of Primary
