Connecting With Culture

At the end of Term 3, members of the Iona Banji Group had the privilege of hosting the Lourdes Hill College ‘Mirragin Girls’ for an afternoon of building strong cultural connections between the two First Nations Groups on Qandamooka Country, here at Iona.

The afternoon began with a friendly game of mixed touch football, followed by afternoon tea and a Yarning Circle, where students introduced themselves to each other using ‘Aboriginal Terms of Reference’.

It was a beautiful opportunity to strengthen cultural bonds, build friendships, and celebrate unity through shared stories and laughter.

Celebrating Community Achievements

During the school holidays, a number of our Banji Brothers proudly represented their families, mob, and culture through sporting excellence and participation beyond the College.

Sebastian Brown travelled to Melbourne to compete in the IDA National Tennis Championships, where he played in Junior Singles, Junior Doubles, and Open Mixed Doubles events.

Sebastian we are proud of your achievements during this tournament, and we wish you well with your preparation for next tournament in South Australia later this year.

Congratulations to Tyler Pereira, Cordell Boah, Samson Pereira, Tamarley Mooney, Xavier Saltner, Rueben Burns, Myah Pearce, and Quade Mooney for proudly representing their mobs and playing with great heart and determination at the Queensland Murri Rugby League Carnival, held at Albany Creek.

These young men stood strong with mob, cultural pride, team leadership, and community spirit.

We celebrate their ongoing commitment to their heritage and the way they continue to represent their families and culture with strength, vision, and legacy.
